Osteopathy and Neck Pain   by Rachel Berret

The neck, also referred to as the cervical spine, is the composition of vertebrae that support the weight of your head. The vertebrae that starts from the base of your skull is considered to be the part of your neck. Not only does your neck provide support to your head, it also provides stability to your spine along with allowing your spine and head to move. Although your neck serves many purposes to the mobility and stability of our upper body, the neck is not as well protected as the rest of your spine. This makes it more vulnerable to injuries and disorders that may affect its overall function.

Pain at the neck greatly varies depending on the cause. Nonetheless, this kind of pain is something that should not be ignored nor overlooked. Neck pain may be a symptom of an underlying condition that is potentially worse than otherwise expected.

Associated symptoms of Pain in the Neck

Neck pains may be characterized by a varying feeling of pain. Sometimes, a person may feel the pins-and-needles sensation around their neck area. Other times, there will be pain or numbness in the shoulder, neck, arms, and extending to a person’s fingers. Also, neck pains may also be linked to headaches, migraines, nausea, tinnitus, dizziness, visual disturbances and vomiting.

Causes of Neck Pain

The most common cause of pain around the neck area is muscle strain or tension that can be caused by your daily activities. This could include bending over a desk, or sitting in an uncomfortable position at work; having a bad posture or sleeping in an awkward position.

Other causes of pain in the neck sometimes includes an injury caused by an accident. Unfortunately, sports accidents are the leading cause of serious neck injuries. Other causes include conditions like inflammatory diseases, cervical disc degeneration, and pelvic imbalance.

Osteopathy may help

An excellent Osteopath is a university qualified medical professional who knows how to get the best out of your bones, muscles and body systems. If presented with pain around the neck an experienced Osteopath will conduct examinations to diagnose the cause of the neck pain concentrating mostly on the whole alignment of the spine and on the muscles around the neck. After this diagnosis, an experienced Osteopath will determine the best treatment approach to alleviate your neck pain.

In addition, an experienced Osteopath may recommend different stretching routines and exercises that may assist you to overcome or prevent your neck pain. After all, an osteopath looks at a patient as a whole entity, rather than just concentrating solely on the neck pain.

Back pain is pain felt in the back that usually originates from the muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the spine. The pain can often be divided into neck pain, upper back pain, lower back pain or tailbone pain. It may have a sudden onset or can be a chronic pain; it can be constant or intermittent, stay in one place or radiate to other areas. It may be a dull ache, or a sharp or piercing or burning sensation. The pain may be radiate into the arm and hand), in the upper back, or in the low back, (and might radiate into the leg or foot), and may include symptoms other than pain, such as weakness, numbness or tingling. Back pain is one of humanity’s most frequent complaints. In the U.S., acute low back pain (also called lumbago) is the fifth most common reason for physician visits. About nine out of ten adults experience back pain at some point in their life, and five out of ten working adults have back pain every year. The spine is a complex interconnecting network of nerves, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments, and all are capable of producing pain. Large nerves that originate in the spine and go to the legs and arms can make pain radiate to the extremities.

Headache Clinics: Organisation, Patients and Treatment

$22.48

Headache is a huge public health problem and migraine alone cost 27 billion Euros per year in Europe. It is therefore important how the health care service for headache patients is organised throughout the world. Patients seen at headache clinics are more severely affected than those seen in general practice, and headache clinics need to be familiar with a long list of relatively rare headache disorders. Part of the Frontiers in Headache Research series, this volume is the first book to focus specifically on headache clinics, their classification and organization, their methods of diagnosis, and their approaches to multi-disciplinary management. The clinical features of patients seen in headache clinics are thoroughly discussed. The value of a number of diagnostic laboratory techniques including when and how to use neuro-imaging is discussed. Also a number of more specialised methods employed only in referral headache centres are covered, such as nitro-glycerine challenge, indomethacin test, and oxygen breathing. The treatment options for severely affected patients are discussed including the possibilities of combining two or more prophylactic medications, the use of epidural blood patch and the different methods for discontinuation of medication overuse. This volume will be an invaluable resource for neurologists, physicians in headache/pain clinics and interested general practitioners.
